Be Our Guest

Our guest room and office is awkward and long with a closet smack dab in the middle.

We thought everything was cosmetic with this space, only needing new carpet and paint. The one dilemma being about 3/4 of the walls were covered in paneling. At first glance, I agreed to keep it. Thinking a fresh coat of paint would bring it back to life.

Deep down I hate paneling! If I had my way we would have removed it but given the house history, we never know what’s lurking underneath.

During the renovation process. Good bye to the 70s carpet!

Insert plug to finally get shiplap! I convinced Tim to put DIY shiplap planks over the paneling and the results were well worth it.

Tim bought 11 4’x8’x1/4″ plywood sheets. He ripped them down to 5 7/8″ x 8′ “planks” with a table saw. This gave us eight 8′ planks per sheet. He then nailed the planks to the wall, making sure he hit the studs to keep everything solid. To space the planks Tim used pieces of laminate flooring as spacers.

When it came time to paint the shiplap this was the first time Tim used a paint sprayer. It was definitely quicker but it went through 3 gallons of paint! We did a plain white satin by Dutch Boy.

We bought the same carpet as in the master bedroom from Menards, Irreplaceable Ice Cappuccino. The wall paint is our new favorite, “Perfect Greige”, in eggshell, by HGTV Sherwin Williams Showroom paint line from Lowes.  (This is the color we used when we repainted the living room you’ll see.)

The gray metal bed frame is KOPARDAL by IKEA. The metal frame adds the perfect farmhouse charm. The duvet cover is NYPONROS while the white cushion covers are URSULA by IKEA too. All other pillows are recycled from other parts of the house and bought from T.J. Maxx. The red curtains are LENDA by IKEA.

This is when we discovered IKEA is awesome if you couldn’t tell. They have all styles and you just can’t beat the experience while trying the finishing touch for any room.

The perks of working at an office furniture manufacturing corporation are of course office furniture! Our desk is 10500 Series by HON along with a HON basyx chair. The cubby nooks are the EKET SERIES by IKEA. We thought that was a fun way to tie in storage and add a pop of color on the white shiplap.

We plan on adding pallet cabinet doors above the closet to make the space complete. As well as simple pallet nightstands. It seems nothing is ever finished around here because you can always take away and add to any room.

It’s a simple room but one of our more dramatic before and afters.

I love the simple bed frame and the window is one of my favorite touches
